Hemp Protein Recipes

Hemp protein is extremely versatile.  It imparts a smooth, somewhat nutty flavour to both sweet and savoury dishes and can be used to enhance your favourite pre and post-workout shakes.  Here are a few ideas for you to start using hemp protein powder in the kitchen.

Start Your Day with a Hemp Protein Powered Mochachino

It’s the daily habits that lead to greatness.  The health benefits of your daily cup of coffee have been studied and documented but why not make your morning cup of java even better?  Check out this recipe for a hemp protein cup of coffee that will give you the energy and nutrition needed to conquer the day.

Hemp Protein Coffee

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces of freshly brewed coffee
  • 1 Tablespoon coconut oil
  • 15g Hemp Protein Powder (with Cacao)
  • Stevia to taste (sugar is essentially poison)
  • Milk/cream/coconut milk to taste

Place the ingredients in a blender and pulse for just a couple seconds.  Remove the lid and repeat twice more.  The ingredients should be well mixed and there will be a little foam or froth on the top.  Feel free to make any adjustments you may like.  Nothing is set in stone.  Pour this supercharged mochachino into your favorite coffee mug and enjoy!

Peanut Butter Pre-Workout Hemp Protein Shake

Don’t you hate it when you read some new pre-workout shake recipe that tries to cram in every pseudo-superfood on the planet?  Yeah, me too.  Sorry but I’m not about to go out and buy maca root, acai, chia seeds, and twenty other ingredients just to try out a new protein shake.  It’ll take me half an hour just to make the damn thing and I’ll show up late for my session.  No thanks.  Thankfully, this recipe is definitely not like that.

Ingredients

  • 15-30g Hemp Protein Powder
  • 2 Tablespoons peanut butter
  • 8 ounces milk (or almond/coconut milk)
  • Half of a banana
  • A pinch of salt
  • A few ice cubes
  • A handful of oats

A quick note, most hemp protein powders are chocolate flavored or contain cacao.  It just seems to pair well with the mildly nutty flavor of hemp.  Throw the ingredients in a blender and mix for 30 seconds or until smooth.  It won’t taste exactly like a chocolate peanut butter cup but it’s actually good for you and won’t make your belly jiggle like a bowl of jello.  Life is full of tradeoffs.

Hemp Protein Pancakes

Look, it’s just a fact that protein powders lend themselves better to breakfast foods than other meals.  It’s great to experiment and discover new protein powder possibilities but it’s also wise to know when you’re out of your league.  There’s just no replacing a grass-fed ribeye or your favorite vegetarian dinner, I’m partial to falafel myself.  But when it comes to savory meals using protein powder, nothing is better than everyone’s favorite breakfast: pancakes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk (or milk substitute)
  • 1 tablespoon melted grass-fed butter
  • ½ teaspoon stevia powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup rice flour
  • ½ cup high quality hemp protein powder

Heat up a griddle or pan to a medium heat.  Take out two bowls.  Put the dry ingredients in one and the wet ingredients in the other.  Whisk the dry ingredients first until well mixed then whisk the wet ingredients.  Pour the mixed wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry mix and whisk again until smooth.  Let the batter rest for a couple minutes to thicken.  Butter the griddle and scoop the batter onto the griddle and cook until golden brown on both sides.  Congratulations, you’ve just made legitimately healthy pancakes.

Ridiculously Delicious Hemp Protein Brownies

No, these aren’t those magic brownies that give you the munchies.  All I can say is hemp makes for a damn tasty protein brownie treat.  As a couple of added bonuses, they’re perfectly legal and you don’t need to wait for a cheat day to enjoy one.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup high quality hemp protein powder
  • ½ cup rice flour
  • ¼ cup cacao powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoon stevia
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup almond or hemp milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or coconut oil

Preheat the oven to 175 celsius or 350 fahrenheit.  Grease a cake pan with a little butter or coconut oil.  In one bowl, combine all dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.  Mix all wet ingredients in another bowl.  Combine the wet and dry mixes and then pour the batter into the pan.  Cook for 20-25 minutes.  Remove from oven and let cool for 10 more minutes before serving.
